5 Mistakes in Maintaining an Electric Car Battery

You own a modern electric car: silence in the cabin, rapid acceleration, and the ability to charge it at various points around the city. Such technology is truly amazing!

However, during a test drive, one important detail is often left unmentioned: the battery of an electric car is its heart, but also its weak point. If the battery fails, replacing it can cost a significant amount, potentially equal to the price of a second-hand Gentra car, for example.

Mary Brown, a journalist at SlashGear, wrote an article about 5 common mistakes that gradually damage electric car batteries. Here are the main points from her article: 1.

Fully charging the battery each time is not standard practice. Regularly charging it to 100% accelerates the wear and damage of battery cells.

The optimal charging range is between 20%–80%, and it is recommended to set this limit in the settings. If you're planning a long trip, charge to 100%, but avoid doing so on a daily basis.

2. Don’t allow the battery’s charge level to drop below 20%.

This condition can damage the chemical composition of the battery and shorten its lifespan. Therefore, make it a habit to charge the battery before it falls below 20%.

3. Pay attention to temperature conditions.

The electric car battery does not favor extremely cold or hot environments. At -20°C, the battery charges slower, and the driving range decreases.

At +45°C, the battery cells may overheat and wear out faster. Therefore, try not to leave your car in excessively hot or cold conditions.

4. Avoid using damaged or low-quality charging cables.

If your cable is damaged or uncertified, replace it. Such cables can cause short circuits or even fires.

5. Don’t neglect software updates.

Your electric car is like a computer on wheels. Software updates are essential for protecting the battery, improving its charging efficiency, and resolving other issues.

Make sure to install updates promptly. If you want your electric car’s battery to last longer, keep these tips in mind and follow them.
