Stereotypes that video games harm development have once again been called into question. According to new scientific findings, gaming is not just a way to kill time—it can also be a serious “trainer” that sharpens memory and attention and boosts cognitive abilities. However, the outcome depends directly on the game genre and moderation. This is reported by playground.ru reports .

In a large study published in Nature Communications, a team led by Carlos Coronel noted a link between gaming experience and the brain’s biological age. Experienced gamers who regularly play complex video games showed more efficient brain function, and their brains appeared on average four years “younger” than those of peers who are far from this hobby.

Experts emphasize that real benefits come not from simple “brain training” apps or crosswords, but from large, multi-layered projects that require fast decision-making and strategic thinking.

Psychology professor Shawn Green compares games to nutrition: it’s not the act of “consumption” itself, but the quality of the content. In his view, saying “a child eats a lot” isn’t enough—the key question is: what exactly is the child “eating”?

At the same time, the study’s authors warn that the benefits end where gaming turns into overuse. The most optimal routine is short 30–60 minute sessions. Another important condition is that the brain constantly needs a new challenge. Green advises: if you become too skilled at one game, it stops being beneficial—switch to the next one that makes you feel like a “beginner” again and forces you to push yourself.
