US power grids on the brink of crisis due to Artificial Intelligence

PJM Interconnection, the largest power grid operator in the US, is facing serious challenges despite decades of stable operation. The growth of Artificial Intelligence and cloud technologies has sharply increased the demand for electricity, pushing existing infrastructure to its limits. This is reported by Techcrunch.com reports .

In a recent report, PJM stated that there are only a few years left to fundamentally reform the system. Company head David Mills called the current situation unsustainable. In particular, the high electricity demand from data centers in Northern Virginia is impacting the entire tech world.

The situation is so complex that major utility companies like American Electric Power are considering withdrawing from PJM. In 2022, many projects were stalled due to the suspension of the grid interconnection process and bureaucratic hurdles.

PJM is currently proposing three ways out: strengthening long-term commitments, revising reliability guarantees for customers, or regulating market prices in real-time. However, it remains unclear whether these measures will fully resolve the problem.
