A powerful earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale has struck the southern coast of Turkey's Mugla province. The disaster has caused widespread panic and confusion in the city of Marmaris. The most tragic death was the tragic death of 14-year-old Afranu Gunl.

According to the Turkish Interior Ministry, the earthquake struck near Marmaris in the Aegean Sea at a depth of 67 km. The earthquake struck at 02:17 local time. Although the European Seismological Center assessed the tremors as moderate, it caused great fear and anxiety among the local population.

During the earthquake, many people were forced to jump from high-rise buildings, fearing that buildings might collapse. So far, 69 people have been injured to varying degrees. Of these, 46 were taken to hospitals by ambulance, and 14 people were provided with first aid by doctors on the spot. At the same time, 8 people with minor injuries were discharged from the hospital.

The tragic death of 14-year-old girl Afranu Gunl attracted particular public attention. It was reported that the cause of the girl's death was a condition that doctors described as a "panic attack." When Afranu was taken to the hospital, all medical measures taken to save her were unfortunately ineffective.

Although the earthquake did not cause any serious damage to the city's infrastructure, electricity supply, or natural gas systems, videos from the scene clearly show the fear and panic among residents.

This unexpected situation, which particularly affected visitors to one of the local restaurants, was also captured on video cameras. These videos, which were shared on social media, show people fleeing the earthquake and leaving the restaurant in panic.

It is worth noting that Turkish seismologists have recently been regularly warning about the existence of high-risk areas in the country and the possibility of strong earthquakes. In particular, more than 50,000 people died as a result of the major tragedy that occurred in February 2023.

Scientists also predict that there is a high probability of another major earthquake in the vicinity of Istanbul in the coming years. They warn that a strong earthquake may occur in the country by 2030, and call on the government and the population to be cautious and prepared for emergency situations. For this, it is important to form the culture of citizens to act in emergency situations.

Currently, the country's leadership is actively continuing to provide medical and psychological assistance to those affected by the earthquake.
