Rare Genetic Variation: Rare Black Tigers Live in India’s Forests

The “black tigers,” whose appearance resembles a character from a fantasy film, really do exist. They are not completely black but are considered pseudo-melanistic tigers.

These rare animals are mainly found in the Similipal Tiger Reserve in India’s Odisha state. Their black stripes are much wider and closer together than those of ordinary tigers. As a result, much of the orange color on their bodies remains hidden.

Experts attribute this appearance to a rare genetic variation. Although the tiger looks almost black from a distance, its yellow fur and enlarged stripes can be distinguished up close.

The tigers of Similipal are considered among the rarest big cats in the world. Only a small number remain in the wild.
