Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg, after being detained in Israel, strongly complained about the conditions in her cell: it is said that there were bedbugs in the cell, and sufficient water and food were not provided, The Guardian reports. This information is based on the content of correspondence with Swedish officials.
According to reports, a diplomat from the Swedish embassy entered the Tunberg detention center and personally observed the situation. In an email to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he wrote that he spoke about active "cruel treatment" and was forced to sit on a hard surface for a long time. Thunberg said there were signs of dehydration, and it was mentioned that the rash on his body might have been caused by bugs.
The correspondence notes another claim: security forces allegedly forced Gretha to take pictures with the Israeli flag. Malaysian activist Hazvani Helmi and American Windfield Beaver claimed they were also forced to "kiss the flag." It is noted that these reports have not been fully verified by independent sources.
Italian journalist Lorenzo Agostino also reacted, sharply criticizing the "humiliation of the 22-year-old activist, portraying him as a symbol of victory by wrapping him in a flag." In his opinion, the situation that has occurred raises questions related to human dignity.
Thunberg was among 437 activists, parliamentarians, and lawyers heading towards Gaza as part of the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF). The Israeli Foreign Ministry has stated that the flotilla is "linked to the Palestinian group Hamas," and there is information that the organizers deny these claims.
The official chronology states that the flotilla's path was blocked on October 1st. On October 3, it was reported that several activists were expelled from the country, and on October 4, another 137 people were deported to Istanbul. Official information about the remaining participants is being updated.
It is reported that the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues consular control. The parties make different statements in their official comments, some claims have not yet been officially confirmed. Therefore, for now, all data is being carefully verified, and the results are expected to be published.
