The US resumes nuclear testing

US President Donald Trump has issued an order compelling the Pentagon to urgently resume nuclear weapons testing. This decision, announced through the "Truth Social" social network, is being seen as a sharp turn from the country’s long-standing arms control policy.

In his statement, Trump emphasized that the US possesses the world’s largest nuclear arsenal and that these weapons were fully modernized during his first presidential term. "Because of the enormous destructive power, it was a difficult thing to do, but there was no other choice!", he said, presenting this step as a necessary measure.

The activity of other nuclear powers was cited as the reason for such a decision. "Taking into account that other countries are conducting their own testing programs, I have ordered the Department of Defense to begin testing our nuclear weapons.

This process will start immediately," the statement said. Speaking about the distribution of power, Trump also added, "Russia is in second place, while China is much further behind, but could catch up to us in five years."

This statement signals the US abandoning its nuclear testing moratorium that has been in place since 1992. International observers and the Reuters news agency note that it is still unclear what types of tests are being planned.

Two main options are being considered: nuclear explosive tests or flight tests of missile systems capable of carrying nuclear warheads. Trump’s decision was announced ahead of his meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in South Korea, giving it additional geopolitical significance.

The presidential administration has stated that detailed information on the location and schedule of the tests will be announced later by Washington.
