Neftchi Sign €2.5m-Rated Defender: Who Is Koffi Kouao?
Neftchi have completed a transfer that could make a major impact in the Super League ahead of the second round. The Fergana club have signed 28-year-old Ivorian defender Koffi Kouao, who has extensive experience in the French and Portuguese leagues.
The new signing primarily plays at right-back. However, his ability to also operate at left-back and on the right side of midfield allows Neftchi’s coaching staff to solve several tactical problems with one transfer.
Kouao joins Fergana as a free agent
According to the club, Koffi Kouao's contract with Mes expired on June 30, 2026. Therefore, Neftchi will not pay a transfer fee to the French club for his registration rights.
Transfermarkt has also listed the player as a free agent since 1 July. The portal identifies Kouao’s primary position as right-back, with left-back and right midfield listed as additional positions. His market value is estimated at €2.5 million.
However, there is an important detail: Kouao’s Transfermarkt profile does not yet reflect his move to Neftchi. This may be because the transfer database has not been updated.
He could become the Super League’s most valuable player
In Transfermarkt’s current ranking of Uzbekistan’s Super League, Nasaf goalkeeper Abduvohid Ne’matov is listed as the most valuable player at €1.5 million. Akmal Mozgovoy follows at €1.4 million, with Hojiakbar Alijonov third at €1.3 million.
If Kouao’s move to Neftchi is added to the portal’s database and his €2.5 million valuation remains unchanged, he could become:
the Super League’s most valuable player;
the league’s most valuable foreign player;
the league’s highest-valued defender
He could become all three.
His valuation is €1 million higher than the current leading figure. However, Transfermarkt’s valuation is not an official transfer fee—it is an estimated figure based on the player’s age, contract, performances and market demand.
He was not an ordinary substitute at Metz
Kouao is arriving from France not merely with a reputation, but with regular playing experience.
According to Metz’s official statistics, he played 2,273 minutes in all competitions during the 2025/26 season. That made Kouao the club’s fifth-most-used player. He scored three goals and provided one assist during the campaign.
For a full-back, these figures show that his responsibilities extended beyond simply protecting his own goal. Kouao actively joined attacks, created width on the flank and advanced into shooting positions.
Metz’s official match reports also repeatedly noted his fast movements on the right wing, his role in launching counterattacks and his dangerous shots at the opponents’ goal.
What kind of player has Neftchi signed?
Kouao is not a right-sided player who stays deep in a traditional defensive role. His game is defined by three key qualities.

Kouao can advance down the flank and provide an additional option for the attacker. When possession is lost, his ability to recover quickly is one of his most important qualities.
Versatility across several positions
He can be used as a right-back, left-back or wing-back in a five-man defence.
This versatility gives the coach a major advantage during injuries, suspensions or a congested schedule.
Impact in attack
Kouao can deliver crosses into the penalty area, cut inside from the right flank and accelerate counterattacks.
In one of Metz’s 2025/26 matches, he fired a powerful shot at Nantes’ goal in the opening minutes before launching another dangerous attack with a quick move down the flank.
From the ASEC academy to European football
Koffi Frank Kouao was born on 20 May 1998 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. He is 173 centimetres tall and primarily uses his right foot. The footballer made three appearances for Côte d’Ivoire’s under-23 national team.
He began his football journey in the system of ASEC Mimosas, one of Africa’s most renowned academies. At 18, he moved to Portugal and joined Vizela’s academy system.
During his time in Portugal, he played for Moreirense and Famalicão in addition to Vizela. In 2022, he moved to Metz and competed in France’s first and second divisions.
Metz’s official website presented Kouao as a player who arrived from Portugal in 2022. During his years at the club, he established himself as a regular starter and was even included among the nominees for the fans’ team of the season.
Why is this transfer important for Neftchi?
The Fergana club are the 2025 Uzbekistan champions and the 2026 Super Cup winners. In the new season, the team are preparing not only for domestic competitions but also for the elite stage of the AFC Champions League.

The key question is no longer his name or his €2.5 million valuation. What will matter is how quickly Kouao can reproduce his level from France in the Super League and help Neftchi achieve their title and Asian ambitions.
