Malaysia is preparing for major changes in the procedure for using social networks. The country's government has announced plans to restrict people under 16 from opening new social media pages. This important innovation is expected to take effect from 2026.
Online security - the main goal
Malaysian Minister of Communications Fahmi Fazil stated that the Cabinet of Ministers has approved this initiative aimed at protecting children from virtual threats. The government attributes the decision to a sharp increase in the risks of online bullying, involvement in fraud, the dissemination of negative materials, and violations of personal privacy. According to the minister, the insufficient effectiveness of the current age control measures required tightening the situation.
Technical and legal approval pending
Although the plan is expected to take effect from the beginning of 2026, it is not yet a fully legally binding document. For now, this is a plan approved by the government, which must be legally enshrined.
Since January of this year, platforms with more than 8 million users in Malaysia are required to obtain licenses and establish an age verification system, which is a step in preparation for the upcoming restriction.
It should be noted that Australia was the first country in the world to ban social networks for users under the age of 16.
