Representatives from the defense ministries of Cambodia and Thailand are set to hold an official meeting on December 24 to discuss mutual peace efforts. This was reported by Reuters, citing Thailand's Foreign Minister, Sihasak Phuangketkeow.
It has been reported that the decision to hold this meeting was made during the Southeast Asian Foreign Ministers' conference held in Kuala Lumpur on December 22. The Thai side emphasized that the talks will be conducted without the involvement of external forces, including the United States or China, with the intent of resolving the situation independently and through mutual agreements.
As a reminder, tensions escalated in early December in the border areas between Bangkok and Phnom Penh, resulting in several armed clashes. Over the course of two weeks, approximately 80 people from both sides lost their lives in the skirmishes, while around 500,000 residents were forced to evacuate their homes.
According to Reuters, both Thailand and Cambodia are currently accusing each other of aggressive actions and non-compliance with previously agreed truce terms. The peace agreement, initially brokered in October with the involvement of U.S. President Donald Trump, included significant conditions such as demining, withdrawal of troops, and removal of heavy weaponry from the border areas.
Experts believe that the upcoming meeting could help ease regional tensions and pave the way for long-term stability. As such, these negotiations hold crucial importance not only for the two nations involved but also for the entire Southeast Asia region.
