The European Union is launching a new digital system – the Entry/Exit System. From April 2026, it will record entry and exit of travelers in Europe using biometric data. Traditional passport stamps will be replaced by digital records, making border crossing faster and easier.
Other countries are using similar systems. Australia, Japan, and Canada already use biometric data, and the United States plans to do the same. This could end the tradition of collecting passport stamps.
The history of passport stamps goes back to the Middle Ages. Modern stamps became widespread after World War II and served as keepsakes for travelers. Many people value them as memories of the countries they visited.
Some travelers are sad to lose the stamps, while others appreciate the speed and convenience of the new system. Many plan to record their travels with photos or other souvenirs as borders become digital.
