Electronic Prescription System Introduced for Medication Sales in Uzbekistan

The system of selling medicines through electronic prescriptions introduced in Uzbekistan

As of December 12, Uzbekistan has launched a system for selling medicines through electronic prescriptions. This new development has particularly caused some issues for the population in Tashkent.

According to the electronic prescription system, medications such as paracetamol, ethyl alcohol, nimesulide, and aspirin can only be dispensed by pharmacies based on prescriptions. Additionally, under the new regulation, citizens are allowed to purchase only vitamins and dietary supplements without a prescription. Such changes, leading to the digital collection of personal and medical information, have resulted in some residents facing more challenges than expected when purchasing medicines.

At the same time, concerns have arisen that the rollout of the new system might lead to increased queues at clinics for obtaining prescriptions. On social media, there are growing worries that the inability to purchase medicines without prescriptions may lead to a rise in corruption cases. Some citizens have also pointed out system malfunctions and problems faced by doctors in connecting to the system.

In the first phase of the electronic prescription system, it is planned to connect Tashkent and 15 districts and cities of the republic. Later, this system is expected to be implemented nationwide by the end of 2026.
