
Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi confirmed that Uzbekistan has submitted its instrument of accession to the Vienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage. Rafael Grossi congratulated Uzbekistan on this occasion and emphasized that this step reflects the country’s swift and firm commitment to strengthening nuclear safety and responsibility.
This document was approved by both chambers of parliament in May-June 2025 and signed by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. Accession to the Vienna Convention strengthens the country’s commitment to international standards of civil liability for possible nuclear damage.
The convention lays out the procedure for compensating victims, defines the responsibility of nuclear facility operators, and establishes minimum financial guarantees in the event of an accident. Accession to the Vienna Convention is part of Uzbekistan’s strategy to establish a modern legal framework in the peaceful nuclear sector.
The country plans to implement more than 25 IAEA documents regulating safety standards and rules for handling nuclear materials. Read “Zamin” on Telegram!
