On Sunday, February 23, the day of the snap elections, the candidates for chancellor and representatives of the country's leading parties took the floor in the Berliner Runde program on ARD and ZDF.
War in Ukraine: Alice Weidel debates Robert Habeck
Alice Weidel, the candidate for chancellor of the far-right Alternative for Germany, called Russia's invasion of Ukraine "in violation of international law" during the program, but added: "The question of blame was too one-sided from the beginning."
Robert Habeck, a member of the left-liberal party Alliance 90/Greens and a potential partner in the future ruling coalition of the CDU/CSU, called Weidel's words "lies" and proposed the creation of a special fund to help Ukraine. However, he said that this would require the support of two-thirds of the Bundestag deputies, which may not be possible due to the position of the CDU, Sarah Wagenknecht's left-populist Union (SWI) and the Left Party on the war in Ukraine.
The next German Chancellor and leader of the conservative CDU/CSU bloc, Friedrich Merz, said that the United States under Donald Trump is "indifferent" to the future of Ukraine and Europe. At the same time, he said that the issue of introducing German troops into Ukrainian territory is not currently on the agenda. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
