Legendary GeForce GTX 1080 Ti: How Does the Graphics Card Perform in Today’s Games

Experts from PC Games Hardware tested the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card, which has become a legend in the IT world, in modern games. This comprehensive test, dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the GPU’s GP102 graphics core, showed that this model has still partially retained its relevance and remains one of the longest-serving devices. According to ixbt.com, the test also included the Titan X and Titan Xp versions from the same era. These graphics cores are based on the same architecture, while the Titan Xp differs with a wider bus, an additional 1 GB of memory, and more CUDA cores. The experts tested the capabilities of these older-generation devices in 20 modern projects.

Full HD Results and Modern Competition

The researchers focused primarily on results at the highly popular Full HD resolution. In this mode, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti delivered almost the same performance as the regular Titan X, while the Titan Xp was approximately 17 percent faster than both cards. Most remarkably, this decade-old flagship now performs at the level of the mid-range Radeon RX 6600 and GeForce RTX 3060.

More precisely, the GTX 1080 Ti slightly outperformed the Radeon RX 6600 but trailed the GeForce RTX 3060 by a few percent. Based on the test results, the upcoming RX 9050 8GB is expected to land at roughly the same level, while the next-generation RTX 5050 is likely to be approximately 15 percent faster than the veteran card.

Raw Performance and Technological Limitations

Since all games were tested at the highest graphics settings, it is natural that the older card struggles in some extremely demanding titles. In Alan Wake 2, for example, this veteran accelerator could not even deliver 25 fps. Nevertheless, it was possible to achieve more than 60 fps in Baldur's Gate 3, while Battlefield 6 reached close to 50 fps.

It is worth noting that the GeForce GTX family does not support the modern AI-based DLSS technology. However, users can turn to alternative, older upscaling methods such as FSR and XeSS. Thanks to its sufficient memory capacity and robust architecture, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti continues to rank among the longest-lasting and most durable graphics cards available today.
