The number of children in Japan has fallen to a record low
The number of children under the age of 15 in Japan has fallen to its lowest level since records began in 1950, according to a new report by the country's Ministry of Public Administration and Communications.

The report, released ahead of the country's national holiday, Children's Day, found that as of April 1, the total number of children under the age of 15 in Japan was 13.7 million, down 350,000 from the same period last year.

It said that children now make up just 11.1 percent of Japan's population of 124 million. Japan ranks second from bottom in the United Nations' ranking of 37 countries with populations over 40 million. South Korea, which ranks last, made up just 10.6 percent of the population, said the report.

Currently, the Japanese government is implementing various measures to solve the demographic problem. In particular, the amount of financial support for families with children is increased, and the system of holidays for parents who have children is being expanded. However, these measures are not giving the expected results.
