According to Foreign Affairs, Pakistani military experts are actively working on the development of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of reaching the United States. The missile is expected to be equipped with either a nuclear or conventional warhead and hit targets over 5,500 kilometers away.
Reports suggest that Pakistan accelerated this effort following India’s special operation code-named "Sindhur." With China's assistance, Islamabad is striving to bolster its nuclear capabilities and maintain strategic balance in the region.
Analysts believe that if Pakistan successfully develops such a long-range missile, Washington may consider it a serious threat. Currently, Russia, China, and North Korea are viewed as the main nuclear adversaries of the U.S., but Pakistan could soon join this list.
Pakistan's nuclear program began in the early 1970s, mainly as a response to India’s first nuclear test in 1974. In 1998, Pakistan officially became a nuclear power after conducting six nuclear tests.
Recent intelligence suggests that Islamabad’s pursuit of ICBMs is a reaction to India’s growing military strength and investments in advanced missile defense systems. Historically, Pakistan has relied on its nuclear arsenal to counter India’s military advantage. However, these new developments could further escalate the arms race in South Asia.
Washington is deeply concerned about the expansion of Pakistan’s nuclear capabilities, especially given its close ties with China. The U.S. warns that such missiles could threaten not just regional but also global security.
Although China has not officially endorsed Pakistan’s ICBM program, its ongoing military and economic support helps enhance Islamabad's defense posture.
