Against the background of the complex situation in the Middle East, the German Foreign Ministry made a sharp statement on ending the war in the Gaza Strip, writes dw.com. According to Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, who spoke before his departure to Tel Aviv, if Hamas lays down its arms, releases all hostages, including German citizens, and gives up political influence in the sector, the armed clashes in Gaza may be ended.
Wadephul emphasized: “Germany will continue to ensure Israel’s security and support it. But we demand from Hamas the release of hostages, including German citizens, disarmament, and the cessation of political influence in the Palestinian territories. From now on, threats against Israel by Hamas must not be allowed.”
In the German Foreign Ministry statement, it is noted that although efforts for negotiations continue, Hamas is still not ready to surrender and end the conflict. At the same time, it is specially stated that the situation in the Gaza Strip is becoming increasingly acute, and this situation cannot and will not leave Germany indifferent.
“Germany recognizes its special responsibility towards Israel. But the sharp deterioration of the situation in the Gaza Strip cannot and will not leave Germany indifferent,” the MFA website states.
According to the MFA, Germany fully understands its responsibility to Israel. However, the humanitarian crisis and consequences of the war in Gaza remain a serious cause for concern for the entire world community.
In the current difficult situation, Germany is calling on the international community to resolve the problem peacefully. The fate of civilians suffering from the war and the hostages remains in the focus of responsible agencies.
