Conti Tower collapses in Rome

The Conti Tower collapses in Rome
On November 3, a part of the Torre dei Conti tower, located in the center of Rome near the Imperial Forum, collapsed. Restoration work had been ongoing on this building since 2022, and completion was planned for 2026.

A Kursiv Uzbekistan journalist went to the scene and observed the rescue operations in progress. The rescuers cleared the debris and inspected the damaged part of the tower.

The rescuers extracted a 64-year-old worker from under the rubble. He was taken to the hospital in serious condition with a head injury.

Two other workers sustained minor injuries and refused hospitalization. The area around the building was completely cordoned off, and the rescuers continued their work until evening.

They also checked the stability of the remaining structures. Representatives of government agencies also arrived at the scene.

For your information: the tower was built in 1203 on the orders of Riccardo Conti, a relative of Pope Innocent III. Initially, its height reached 50 meters, making it one of the highest defensive towers in medieval Rome.

Due to earthquakes and destruction in subsequent centuries, the upper levels of the tower disappeared, and its current height is about 29 meters. At various times, the tower was used as a fortress and as a residence for noble families.

Although extensive restoration work was carried out in the 20th century, the building has remained fragile due to its age.
