Russia plans to build a power plant on the Moon within the next decade. The facility is expected to supply electricity to Russia’s lunar program as well as a joint Russian-Chinese research center. Through this project, Russia aims to conduct long-term scientific activities on the Moon.
According to Russia’s state space agency Roscosmos, the power plant is planned to be completed by 2036. As part of the project, a stable energy source will be created to support lunar vehicles, scientific observation equipment, and research infrastructure.
Although official statements do not clearly specify the type of the plant, it is expected to be based on nuclear energy, as major Russian nuclear organizations are involved in the project. Roscosmos head Dmitry Bakanov previously said that building a nuclear power plant on the Moon is one of Russia’s key goals.
Experts say the project is aimed at strengthening Russia’s position in the space sector. In recent years, the United States and China have been actively exploring the Moon. Creating a permanent energy source on the Moon could allow Russia to move from one-time missions to long-term research.
