The European Commission is preparing to launch an antitrust investigation against Meta Corporation. According to a report by the Financial Times, this move is prompted by Meta's use of its artificial intelligence technology in the WhatsApp messenger platform.
Sources cited by the publication indicate that an official announcement could be made in the coming days. Additionally, the company has integrated chatbots and an AI assistant into WhatsApp.
These tools have been available in the European region since March 2025. Over the summer, Italy launched a separate investigation into Meta, accusing the company of leveraging its dominant market position to promote its AI features.
Later, allegations surfaced that the company was restricting access to alternative chatbots developed by other manufacturers. The European Commission has yet to provide comments regarding the potential investigation.
Meanwhile, Meta stated that it has no official information about the investigation’s launch and described the claims made by the Italian government as unfounded.
