Nigeria declares state of emergency over mass kidnappings

The President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, declared a state of emergency due to the increase in mass abductions of people in the country. He ordered the recruitment of additional personnel for the Armed Forces and the police. The police will hire 20,000 new officers, bringing their total number to 50,000.

Tinubu also called for a review of security in remote areas, where schools are inadequately protected. It was recommended to request help to ensure security in mosques and churches. Additionally, herders were asked to stop grazing cattle on open pastures and to surrender illegal weapons.

At the same time, the United States accused the Nigerian government of turning a blind eye to the mass killing of Christians by insurgents. The Nigerian government, however, emphasized that the violence is not religious but social in nature.
