14-year-old Miles Wu has crafted a structure from paper that can withstand a weight ten thousand times its own, reports Business Insider.
In his study, a New York schoolboy discovered that an origami scheme called miura-ori could be used to improve the structure of buildings. The Wu project can make homes more resilient during emergencies, particularly during earthquakes.
Wu tested 54 origami variants from three types of paper and focused on the final variant that won the grand prize at the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge.
"The final statistics on the strongest miura-ori I've ever tested showed that it can withstand a weight ten thousand times its own," said the schoolboy. "This is equivalent to the number of taxis in New York that can accommodate more than 4,000 elephants."
The teenager wants to spend the received reward on education. "One thing I really want to learn is to create a shelter where my origams can be used in real-life situations and truly help people," said Wu.
