In Russia, a cheap weight-loss drug called “Molecule” is spreading quickly on social media. On TikTok and other platforms, it promises rapid weight loss, so many teenagers and young women are buying it online. The drug’s advertisements and descriptions often do not mention medical supervision or recommendations.
However, those who took “Molecule” experienced serious side effects: dry mouth, irritability, rapid heartbeat, and insomnia. Some patients fainted or were hospitalized with symptoms of poisoning. Experts say the drug may contain sibutramine, a substance considered dangerous in many countries.
Sibutramine can worsen heart and blood pressure problems, so it should only be used under medical supervision. Doctors strongly advise against taking such drugs on your own and warn about the risks of buying from unreliable online sources. Proper diet and regular physical activity are the safest ways to lose weight healthily.
The government and health authorities have announced measures against illegal drug sales, but parents and teachers should also warn children and teenagers about suspicious social media ads. Anyone experiencing side effects or symptoms of poisoning should contact a doctor immediately. Only official and reliable sources should be used when purchasing drugs online.
