American translator and orientalist Mark Reese announced that the translation of the novel "Bygone Days," on which he worked for 15 years, was uploaded online without his permission. Following this incident, the Ministry of Justice conducted an inspection at the Uzbek State World Languages University.
During the inspection, it was discovered that the work had been fully converted into electronic format and uploaded to the website unilibrary.uz without the author’s consent or a formal contract. A court fined the responsible official 2.06 million soums.
The electronic version of the work has been removed from the website. To prevent similar incidents in the future, the university organized a seminar on compliance with copyright laws.
The translator was informed of his right to demand compensation ranging from 20 to 1,000 times the base calculation amount (from 8.24 million to 412 million soums) under the law.
