Fewer men in Tashkent: what is the situation in other regions?

While the demographic balance in Uzbekistan is generally maintained, these indicators vary uniquely in certain regions. According to the Statistics Agency, as of January 1, 2026, there were an average of 1,015 men for every 1,000 women across the country.
This indicates that, overall, the number of men slightly exceeds that of women. In other words, the traditional demographic ratio is maintained in most regions of the republic.
However, the only exception among all 14 regions is Tashkent city. In the capital, there were only 966 men for every 1,000 women. Experts explain this situation by the relatively high migration of women to large cities.
The highest indicator was recorded in the Namangan region, where there are 1,034 men for every 1,000 women. Interestingly, while in Tashkent the number of women exceeds the number of men by 34, in Namangan it is the opposite — men outnumber women by the same amount.
In the remaining regions, the male majority is also maintained:
- Kashkadarya — 1,029;
- Andijan — 1,027;
- Navoi — 1,026;
- Surkhandarya — 1,025;
- Jizzakh and Fergana — 1,019;
- Samarkand — 1,016;
- Karakalpakstan — 1,010;
- Sirdaryo — 1,009;
- Tashkent region — 1,008;
- Bukhara — 1,006;
- Khorezm — 1,004.
According to experts, such demographic differences are related to internal migration, job distribution, and social factors, and the increase in the share of women in large cities is considered a natural phenomenon.
