Flood risk in mountainous areas may increase again from May 23–25

Due to heavy rains in Uzbekistan from May 23–25, flash floods and mudslides may occur in foothill and mountainous areas. Uzhydromet has issued a special warning, urging citizens, vacationers, and drivers traveling through mountainous routes to exercise caution.
According to reports, active precipitation is expected in the foothill and mountainous districts of several regions across the republic. In some areas, heavy rainfall over a short period may cause streams to overflow, water to accumulate in low-lying areas, and localized flooding.
The flood risk remains in the Yakkabag, Dehkanabad, Chirakchi, Kitab, Shahrisabz, Kamashi, and Guzar districts of the Kashkadarya region. In the Surkhandarya region, caution is required in the Sariosiyo, Uzun, Altinsoy, Denau, Baysun, Sherabad, Shurchi, Kumkurgan, and Muzrabat districts.
In the Samarkand region, the Urgut, Samarkand, Bulungur, Nurabad, Kushrabat, Kattakurgan, Payaryk, Jambay, and Ishtikhan districts are mentioned as high-risk areas. In the Navoi region, there is a possibility of flash floods in the Khatyrchi, Navbakhor, Nurata, Kanimekh, and Karmana districts.
In the Jizzakh region, the Zamin, Bakhmal, Gallaaral, Sharof Rashidov, Farish, and Yangiabad districts, and in the Tashkent region, the Akhangaran, Bostanlyk, Parkent, Piskent, Urtachirchik, and Yukorichirchik districts, as well as the cities of Angren and Almalyk, remain at risk due to weather conditions.
Additionally, precautionary measures must be strengthened in the Pop, Kasansay, Chartak, Chust, Namangan, and Yangikurgan districts of the Namangan region; the Sokh, Fergana, and Besharyk districts, and the Shakhimardan area of the Fergana region; and the Andijan, Asaka, Jalaquduk, Kurgantepa, Pakhtaabad, Izbaskan, Khodjaabad, and Marhamat districts and the city of Khanabad in the Andijan region.
Experts advise residents living in mountainous areas, citizens planning to vacation in the mountains, and drivers on the roads to strictly follow safety rules. Stopping or traveling near streams, ravines, water flows, and low-lying areas can be particularly dangerous.
In some places, there is a possibility of rainwater accumulation and overflow from ditches and streams. This could lead to flooding in residential areas, internal roads, and agricultural fields.
As a reminder, heavy rainfall on May 21 resulted in flash floods in parts of the Jizzakh, Tashkent, Kashkadarya, Navoi, Surkhandarya, and Samarkand regions. In Navoi, floodwaters damaged vehicles, and residents living near streams were temporarily evacuated. In the Tashkent region, floodwaters cut across highways.
In short, the situation in foothill and mountainous areas may be serious from May 23–25. The weather is not just at a 'light rain' level, but at a warning level related to flood risk. Therefore, those planning to go to the mountains, embark on long journeys, or stay near streams should check the situation in advance and prioritize safety.
