6 people die on the road every day
In Uzbekistan, an average of six people lose their lives on the roads every day. This is not just official statistics, but a warning signal. On July 8, 2025, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev strongly emphasized the need for a new approach to these problems at a meeting dedicated to road surface quality, safety systems, and accident prevention.

According to the president’s press secretary, the meeting analyzed the funds allocated for roads and the reforms carried out over the past 7 years. It was revealed that 3.5 times more — 61 trillion soums — had been spent compared to the entire independence period before 2017. However, the results are still not as expected.

The numbers speak for themselves. In 2024 alone, 9364 traffic accidents were recorded, resulting in 2030 deaths. That means every fourth accident ends in a fatality. In other words, at least six families are thrown into mourning every day. The highest number of fatalities occurred in Samarkand, Tashkent, and Fergana regions.

In the first half of 2025, the situation remains tense in 20 regions. Accidents have increased in districts such as Kiziltepa, Chust, Taylak, Paxtachi, Urgut, Khankay, Peshkun, Denov, Olmazor, Shovot, and others. However, there are also positive examples: in cities like Muynak, Nukus, Yangiobod, Takhtakupir, and Ohangaron, no fatalities were recorded. These successes should be promoted and implemented widely.

At the meeting, Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced the implementation of the national program “Safe Road.” Within this program, not only road infrastructure but also pedestrian safety will be reconsidered. Based on this, a republican fund “Safe Road and Safe Pedestrian” will be created.

The fund will receive 400 billion soums from the state budget in 2025. The money will be used only for targeted and useful projects — building pedestrian paths, installing traffic lights, road signs, barriers, and ensuring physical and visual safety.

Encouragingly, 25% of fines collected from traffic violations will be directed to this fund. This will give every citizen a chance to contribute to public safety through responsible behavior.

One of the main problems on the roads is the lack of coordination between infrastructure and control systems. It was found that 967 km of pedestrian walkways and 38,000 road signs are missing, and more than 1,500 roads lack protective barriers. These findings also highlight other underlying issues.

In Fergana, after installing barriers on a 6 km section of the D-105 road, no fatalities occurred in 2025, while in previous years up to 10 people died annually. This example confirms the effectiveness of such measures.

A new electronic portal will also be launched under the program. Citizens will be able to get real-time information about road problems, signs, traffic lights, and pedestrian crossings, leave feedback, and vote on projects. With photos and videos, the public will also serve as observers.

One of the most important aspects is fair distribution of resources. Every region and district will have equal opportunities. The authority to allocate funds will also be carried out based on this principle.

As the president emphasized, “every human life is priceless.” Each person who dies on the road is a blow to the heart of the state, society, and family. Therefore, there can be no negligence, bureaucracy, or indifference in this system.

Every hokim, every leader, every road department head must see making roads safe in their area as a civic duty. This must become not only the state's responsibility, but a collective mission of the entire society.
