Olaf Scholz said Ukraine can count on Germany and Europe. This was his response to German Chancellor Donald Trump's threat to withdraw support for Kiev if it does not sign a resource deal with the United States.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed his support for Ukraine and its President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday evening, February 28, following a scandal that erupted during a meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington.
"No one wants peace more than the Ukrainians. That is why we are working together to achieve a lasting and just peace. Ukraine can count on Germany — and Europe," Scholz wrote on the X social network. This was his response to Trump's threat to withdraw support for Kiev if it does not sign a rare earths deal.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock also stressed that Ukraine "is not alone" and "can count on the unwavering support of Germany, Europe and other countries."
Friedrich Merz, the leader of the conservative CDU/CSU bloc that won the Bundestag elections and the future German chancellor, wrote in turn: "Dear Volodymyr Zelensky, we support Ukraine in good times and in bad times."
"The actions of the US administration show once again that Europe must take its future into its own hands. Together, we must be stronger at all levels. Germany must step forward. Not least to help Ukraine," said Lars Klingbeil, co-chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Germany.
European politicians' reaction to the White House standoff
"Ukraine is Europe! We stand with Ukraine. We will strengthen our support for Ukraine in its continued resistance to the invader. Today, it has become clear that the free world needs a new leader. We, Europeans, must rise to this challenge," wrote EU High Representative Kaia Kallas on her Twitter account.
"Your will is a testament to the courage of the Ukrainian people. Be strong, courageous, fearless. You will never be alone, dear President Zelensky. We will continue to work with you for a just and lasting peace," said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
"There is an aggressor: Russia. There is a victim: Ukraine," wrote French President Emmanuel Macron on his Twitter account. "We were right to help Ukraine three years ago and impose sanctions on Russia, and we continue to do so. We are Americans, Europeans, Canadians, Japanese and others. Thank you to all who helped and continue to fight. For independence, for their children and for the security of Europe.”
“Dear Volodymyr Zelensky, dear Ukrainian friends, you are not alone,” Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said after talks in Washington.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez wrote on social media: “Ukraine, Spain is with you.”
Italian Prime Minister Giorgi Meloni called for a summit between the United States and European countries. “Any division of the West weakens us all and helps those who want to see our civilization collapse,” the statement said.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s press office said he had “spoke with President Trump and President Zelensky” on February 28. Starmer “continues to stand by Ukraine and do everything in his power to find a sustainable path to peace based on its sovereignty and security,” Downing Street said, adding: “The Prime Minister looks forward to meeting world leaders, including President Zelensky, on Sunday.”
“The strong make peace, the weak make war. Today, President Donald Trump has courageously stood up for peace, even though it may be hard for many to accept. Thank you, Mr President!” Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban wrote on his blog.
Belgian prime minister Bart de Wever, former Austrian chancellor Karl Neuhammer, Danish prime minister Mette Frederikson, Czech prime minister Petr Pavel, Croatian prime minister Petteri Orpo, Latvian president Edgars Rinkevich, Dutch prime minister Anthony Albanese, Luxembourg prime minister Luc Frieden, Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau and many other politicians also supported Volodymyr Zelensky and the Ukrainian people they said that they would be happy.
