French President Emmanuel Macron called his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday evening, February 28, after his controversial reception by US President Donald Trump. This was reported by Financial Times journalist Christopher Miller, citing sources close to the Ukrainian leader.
It is not known exactly what Zelensky and Macron discussed on the phone. However, the FT added that after their conversation, the Ukrainian president also called NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The content of this conversation is also still unknown.
A day earlier, Rutte announced that the North Atlantic Alliance is preparing a new aid package for Ukraine, including "billions of euros" and security guarantees. The NATO Secretary General made the statement after a phone call with Trump, which Rutte himself described as "excellent."
The meeting of the presidents of Ukraine and the United States ended in a scandal
Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump met at the White House in Washington on February 28. The two leaders were expected to sign an agreement on mineral resources between the United States and Ukraine. However, the meeting was heated: Zelensky was forced to argue with Trump and US Vice President J.D. Vance and left the White House early. However, the agreement was not signed.
During the meeting, Trump repeatedly accused Zelensky of ingratitude. "You could start World War III. And what you are doing is a deep disrespect for the country that has supported you more than most,” the US president said, threatening to walk away from the Ukraine talks if an agreement is not reached.
After the meeting, Zelensky thanked America for its assistance and reminded that “Ukraine needs a just and lasting peace, and we are working towards that goal.”
Many European politicians, including Emmanuel Macron, supported the Ukrainian leader after his conflict with Trump. “The aggressor is Russia. The victim of aggression is Ukraine. We must thank those who helped, but we must respect those who fought from the beginning,” the French president said.
