111-year-old letter written on the Titanic sold for a record price
A letter written from the ship by Colonel Archibald Gracie, one of the most famous passengers of the Titanic, was sold at auction in London for 300,000 pounds sterling. The Guardian reported this. It is noteworthy that before the sale, the estimated price of this lot was estimated at only 60,000 pounds. At the auction, the price of the lot increased five times more than the estimated price.

As it turned out, this letter is the most expensive letter written on board the Titanic and preserved to this day, which was sold for a record price.

The letter had never been shown to the general public before being put up for auction. It was written on April 10, 1912, the day Gracie boarded the famous ship. Archibald Gracie wrote in his letter: “This is a very beautiful ship, but I prefer to wait until my voyage is over before giving her a final opinion.”

The letter was addressed to a close acquaintance of the colonel, the grandfather’s brother of the person who put her up for auction, and the recipient was staying at the Waldorf Hotel in London at the time.

Archibald Gracie went down in history as one of the most famous survivors of the Titanic disaster. After the sinking, he decided to write a book about the tragedy and interviewed other survivors and collected their memories. His book, The Truth About the Titanic, is still sold around the world.

For your information, Archibald Gracie died on December 4, 1912, approximately eight months after the Titanic disaster. His books and memoirs are of historical significance and are still recognized today as one of the most important sources on the Titanic.
