OpenAI’s Luxury Influencer Trip Sparks Public Backlash

As intense debate around artificial intelligence technologies continues, OpenAI’s first luxury retreat trip organized for bloggers has sparked serious backlash among internet users. TechCrunch reports that a group of prominent influencers attended the “Summer Club” event, held over a weekend in nature in New York State, where they enjoyed various amenities and lessons on using products. Techcrunch.com reports this.
The aesthetic, lighthearted videos posted by participants on social media attracted numerous critical comments. In particular, bloggers who covered the brand trip on TikTok and Instagram were accused of “selling their souls for a nice hotel room.” Some users also asked them to create videos about the environmental impact of artificial intelligence data centers. One participant even deleted one of their trip-related videos after the criticism.
A new marketing strategy in the industry
Analysts say it is not unexpected for a major technology company like OpenAI to engage influencers. In February this year, Vanity Fair reported that the company had appointed Charles Porch, former Instagram vice president of global partnerships, as its first vice president of creative partnerships. His responsibilities include communicating with creative communities and studying how people interact with artificial intelligence tools. It is also worth noting that OpenAI is not the only artificial intelligence laboratory working with influencers. According to the Sarah and Kate technology newsletter, Anthropic also hosted an influencer dinner for Claude, while Microsoft Copilot invited bloggers to the Super Bowl in February. However, events held by other companies have not triggered reactions or controversy as intense as OpenAI’s.
The timing and environmental concerns
In a comment posted on LinkedIn, one event participant wrote that they had expected people to be interested in the secrets of using technology, but had not imagined there would be so many people hostile toward artificial intelligence. “I never imagined for a second that these topics would be so controversial,” they admitted. The timing of the trip also attracted public attention. At a time when OpenAI was preparing to sign a contract to build a data center worth $500 billion in Ohio, the social and environmental impact of artificial intelligence infrastructure had become a pressing issue. Holding a brand event at a luxurious retreat in nature was met with sarcasm and criticism by many users.
