Russia struck Ukraine's energy system again on a cold night

On the night of February 3, Russia's large-wave attacks using missiles and drones resumed across Ukrainian cities. Ukrainian officials say that the main target is the most important infrastructure, especially energy facilities.

Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ignat stated that the strike directions included Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odessa, and the Dnipro and Vinnytsia directions. He noted that "too much ballistics" was used, there were more than 70 missiles flying on the ballistic trajectory - shooting down targets of this type is much more difficult than a regular drone or a cruise missile.

The energy company DTEK included this wave among the strongest impacts observed since the beginning of the year: it was reported that thermal power plants and stations operating in heating mode were damaged. Winter's "fern" - at this very time - every blow to electricity and heat directly affects the lives of ordinary people.

In the capital, the consequences were the most painful: according to Vitaliy Klitschko, after the attacks, 1,170 apartment buildings were disconnected from heat supply, and planned power outages were also introduced in some districts. On a night when the temperature dropped to -20 degrees Celsius, these figures are not just statistics - they are the real concern of parents with children at home, the elderly, and patients in hospitals.

The attacks are also closely linked to the diplomatic backdrop. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov previously stated that the temporary "break" on non-strike on energy facilities would last until February 1st, while the Ukrainian side held the position that such restrictions should last longer. In addition to this background, statements about the request of US President Donald Trump were also mentioned.

The most interesting thing is that the negotiations are on the agenda again: it was said that the next stage is scheduled for February 4-5 in Abu Dhabi (the initial plan has changed). Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that after the latest strikes, "appropriate adjustments" will be made to the positions of Ukrainian negotiators, emphasizing that "every blow to the energy sector" shows that Moscow does not take diplomacy seriously.

The conclusion is this: regardless of the situation at the front, the energy issue becomes a separate "second front" in winter. But even here there is one important thing for the future - the more the system crashes, the faster recovery and protection become "standard": backup power, local heating points, generator infrastructure, security protocols. In short, severe cold comes to break a person, but preparation overcomes it.
