Chelsea Changes Transfer Policy to Sign Experienced Players

Chelsea have made a sharp U-turn in their transfer policy in recent years. According to The Athletic, the club is now focusing on signing experienced players instead of searching for promising young talents. As part of this strategy, 35-year-old Danny Welbeck officially joined Chelsea, while 36-year-old Jordan Henderson also arrived at the club. These transfers came as an unexpected development for many football experts. Goal.com reports .

Since January 2023, Todd Boehly and the Clearlake consortium had repeatedly stressed that prioritising the recruitment of young players with growth potential was the club’s main objective. However, since taking over in May 2022, the club’s leadership had not completely ruled out ready-made, experienced players. In particular, experienced signings such as Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who joined the squad at that time, failed to deliver the expected results and soon left the club.

Results of the Youth Policy and the New Approach

The failure of these three players prompted a change in the transfer strategy at the beginning of 2023. Over the past three seasons, Chelsea fielded the youngest squad on average in the Premier League. In return, the club finished sixth, fourth and tenth in the league, while also winning the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Looking at the figures, Tosin Adarabioyo, who joined from Fulham as a free agent in 2024, was the oldest player to appear for the team during the 2025–26 season, at 28. That is why the signings of Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson are being viewed as moves that directly contradict this youth policy. The change is intended to ensure greater balance within the squad.

The Board’s Plans and Future Prospects

Xabi Alonso, appointed head coach in May, is not solely responsible for these changes. Club co-owner Behdad Eghbali had already warned about them in April at the CAA World Congress of Sports in Los Angeles. Eghbali stressed that the club is constantly working on its plan, improving it and learning from its mistakes: "It became clear that we needed to add ready-made players to the squad to take the project to the next stage."

Chelsea’s current coaching staff hopes that these experienced players will help address the squad’s shortcomings. During the remainder of the Premier League season, the on-field performances and experience of such players are expected to be decisive for Chelsea. Time will tell whether the new strategy will bring long-term stability to the London club.
