US President Donald Trump called NATO a "paper tiger"

US President Donald Trump has called NATO a “paper tiger” after Washington’s European allies declined to join a possible military operation around the Strait of Hormuz. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the alliance was weak without the United States and accused its members of acting out of fear.

Trump argued that European countries did not want to take part in efforts to stop what he described as a nuclear Iran. He also complained that some allies were criticizing high oil prices after refusing to help secure the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping routes for energy exports. According to him, reopening the passage would require only a limited military move with very little risk for Europe.

His remarks came after a recent European Union summit failed to approve military support for the United States in its confrontation with Iran. Instead, participants limited themselves to a general call for increasing the number of ships in existing EU missions near the coast of Somalia and in the Red Sea.

The comments highlight growing tension between Washington and its European partners over how far they should go in backing US security actions in the Middle East.
