In India, a man dug up his sister's body and took it to a bank to withdraw money from her account

In India, a man dug up his sister's body and brought it to a bank in an attempt to withdraw $211 from her account. The New York Post reported this.

A video of the incident has spread widely on social media. 50-year-old Jitu Munda intended to access the funds in his sister's account by proving her death. However, he was unable to provide the necessary documents to confirm the death to the bank.

It is reported that he attempted to withdraw approximately 20,000 rupees ($211) from the account of his sister, Kalra Munda, who passed away in January at the age of 56. Munda brought the remains of the body, wrapped in a cloth, to a branch of the Odisha Grameen Bank located in the Keonjhar district of Odisha state.

“I went to the bank several times, and the staff there told me to bring the account holder, saying I could only receive the funds in her name after that. Even though I told them she was dead, they did not believe me and demanded I bring her to the bank. Therefore, out of frustration, I dug up the grave and brought her skeleton as proof of death,” Munda told journalists.

According to officials, the man did not fully understand the procedure for registering himself as a legal heir to withdraw the money from his sister's account.

“Jitu is an illiterate tribal man. The bank staff were unable to sufficiently explain the procedure for withdrawing money from a deceased person's account to him,” said local police inspector Kiran Prasad Sahu.

Following the incident, officials assisted Munda in completing the legal process to obtain the funds. His sister's body was reburied under police supervision.

The chairman of Odisha Grameen Bank described the incident as a “very unfortunate situation” and demanded that staff strictly adhere to protocols.

Bank representatives stated that staff had explained to Munda that a death certificate and inheritance documents were required to withdraw the funds. However, he did not agree with these requirements and later returned to the bank with his sister's body. This situation caused panic among bank employees and customers, after which the local police were notified.

“The police intervened, and the matter was resolved,” said Chairman Rishi Singh.

It is reported that no charges have been filed against Munda regarding this incident.
