Russia has increased the volume of natural gas supplies to the countries of Central Asia, including Uzbekistan. According to TASS, the Russian trade mission in Uzbekistan reported that Gazprom increased its gas exports by 15 percent during January–August 2024.
According to the company’s head, Alexey Miller, over the next five years, the economies of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan may grow by 60 percent. This, in turn, will lead to a rise in the demand for energy and gas.
Experts believe that the “Power of Siberia – 2” gas pipeline project plays an important role in the growth of Russian gas exports to Central Asia. Once implemented, Russia will have the opportunity to expand gas supplies to China and southern routes.
According to data from Uzbekistan’s National Statistics Committee, the country reduced its gas imports from Turkmenistan and Russia by 27.9 percent in January–August 2025, amounting to 885.9 million dollars. However, the Ministry of Energy did not disclose information about the volume and price of imported gas.
It should be recalled that in October 2023, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev officially launched the process of supplying Russian gas to Uzbekistan through Kazakhstan. Under the agreement, Uzbekistan purchases 2.8 billion cubic meters of gas annually.
Experts emphasize that Russia’s move has not only economic but also geopolitical significance. This, in turn, creates opportunities for Uzbekistan to ensure energy security and strengthen regional cooperation.
