Uzbekistan’s People’s Poet Sharifa Salimova Dies at 75

Uzbekistan’s People’s Poet Sharifa Salimova died at the age of 75 on 5 August. The Writers’ Union of Uzbekistan announced this.

Sharifa Salimova was born on 30 December 1951 in Parkent district of Tashkent region. She graduated from the Faculty of Journalism at Tashkent State University. Over the years, the poet worked for the Uzbekistan Television and Radio Committee, Saodat magazine and the O‘zbekiston adabiyoti va san’ati newspaper. She also served as a deputy of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis.

She authored poetry collections including “Hayot zavqi”, “Mening bahorim”, “Xizr bulog‘i”, “Tongga qasam”, “Giyohlar bilan tillashgan inson” and “Vatan suvrati”. Sharifa Salimova also translated works by poets from foreign and neighboring countries into Uzbek.

In 1994, the poet was awarded the honorary title of “Honored Cultural Worker of the Republic of Uzbekistan”. Notably, on 28 May this year, she was presented with the high honorary title of “People’s Poet of Uzbekistan”. Sharifa Salimova was awarded the “Mehnat shuhrati” Order in 2018.

Her poems “Qaddingni tik tut, ayol”, “Vatan”, “Davlatli sultonim mening”, “Qo‘rqitar”, “Achom-achom qilasiz” and others have been performed as songs by singer Yulduz Usmonova.

The funeral prayer will be held at Chig‘atoy Mosque after the Asr prayer.
