Real Madrid: What structural changes are expected in 2026?

According to the influential publication The Athletic, Real Madrid is planning major squad changes ahead of the 2026-2027 season. These changes are expected to be particularly noticeable in the defensive line. The Madrid side is primarily prepared to part ways with their experienced players.
Austrian defender David Alaba has announced plans to leave Madrid despite his healthy successes at the club. His departure will undoubtedly be a big change for the team. Moreover, the future of experienced defenders like Antonio Rüdiger and Dani Carvajal will depend on how they spend the rest of the season, and their agreements will be finalized by the new year.
Another part of these changes also applies to Frenchman Ferlan Mendy. Although he has a contract with the club until 2028, Real Madrid is considering his departure. Mendy's future should align with the club's tactical and strategic goals.
Regarding the offensive line, Madrid is considering another important deal - with Brazilian Rodrigo. There are opportunities to sell it for a large sum in the summer of 2026. However, if Rodrigo improves his performance and team effectiveness, Real Madrid's plans to sell or loan him may be reviewed.
The Madrid club appears to aim to rejuvenate and strengthen the team to effectively implement major changes in the future. This, in turn, will help Real Madrid maintain its position in the international arena.
