Meta launches AI to identify underage users

Meta is introducing new AI technology on Facebook and Instagram to identify users under 13. The system estimates age by analyzing visual cues like height and bone structure. Company representatives state this is not facial recognition, but an analysis based on general visual data. According to Techcrunch.com reports.
The new system works in conjunction with text messages and user interactions. For example, contextual cues such as birthday celebrations or mentions of school grades are also considered. If the system identifies a user as underage, their account is temporarily restricted and identity verification documents are required.
This update follows a court ruling in New Mexico. The court fined Meta $375 million for misleading consumers regarding platform safety. Through these measures, the company aims to ensure child safety and comply with legal requirements.
Additionally, Meta is expanding its "Teen Accounts" feature on Instagram to 27 countries, including the European Union and Brazil. This feature strengthens safety measures for teens, such as restricting messages to known contacts, hiding harmful comments, and automatically setting accounts to private mode.
