Sensational Comeback at the Hot Dog Contest: The Champion Is Back!

Sensational Comeback at the Hot Dog Contest: The Champion Is Back!
On July 4, New York City’s Coney Island hosted the annual Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, the world’s most popular competitive eating event. According to Reuters, Joey “Jaws” Chestnut has reclaimed the championship title.

The 41-year-old champion from Indiana, returning after a one-year ban, managed to eat 71 hot dogs in 10 minutes, winning back the “Mustard Belt”.

Why didn’t Chestnut participate last year?
In 2024, he was banned from the contest due to his partnership with the plant-based food company Impossible Foods.

The reason for his comeback:
“A lot of people told me they missed me on the Fourth of July. I promised I’d try hard, and I didn’t want to let them down,” he said.

Runner-up placements:
— 2nd place: Patrick Bertoletti — 46 hot dogs.
— Women’s competition:
 – Miki Sudo — 33 hot dogs (defending champion);
 – Michelle Lesco — 22.75 hot dogs.

Miki Sudo fell short of her previous record of 51 hot dogs set last year. But she said:
“I might have stumbled out of the gate, but when things are tough, you get back up and you keep going.”

The contest has been held every year since 1980 on July 4 — U.S. Independence Day. It has become a national tradition and draws interest from around the world.
