Valentina Matviyenko, Chairperson of the Federation Council - the upper house of the Russian Federation's parliament - called on women of the country to have children from the age of 18. He made this statement in an interview with the newspaper "Moskovsky Komsomoles."
"The main task in the field of demography is to change the mentality. Only a person with a close-knit, large, and stable family should be considered successful. "Let it become a tradition to have children, women should make it a habit to give birth not at 28-29 years old, but immediately after reaching adulthood," he said.
Matviyenko believes that women should not postpone childbirth, as this opportunity may be lost later due to medical or other reasons.
For information, the 76-year-old Matviyenko raised one child - Sergey Matviyenko. She gave birth to her child in 1973, at the age of 24.
According to statistics, the population of Russia is declining year by year. As of January 1, 2025, the country's population was 146 million 28 thousand 325 people. This is 0.08% less than last year.
According to estimates, by 2045 Russia's population could decrease from 138.8 million to 130.6 million. Human losses in the war were not taken into account.
According to some demographers' forecasts, by 2100, Russia's population could decrease from 74 million to 112 million. This exacerbates socio-economic problems.
For this reason, the Russian leadership has been recommending early childbirth to the population in recent years. This issue is constantly discussed at meetings of the Council on Demography and Family Policy.
President Vladimir Putin also called motherhood and fatherhood "happiness" and urged young people not to postpone this happiness. She criticized procrastination on having a child, citing her studies or career.
Putin's 2024 decree set the task of increasing the birth rate to 1.6 by 2030 and 1.8 by 2036.
