Gennady Onishenko emphasized that there is no reason for panic regarding Nipah

Deputy President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Onishenko commented on the Nipah virus, calling it "dangerous, but not pandemic." At a press conference, he stated that he believes the development of a vaccine against the Nipah virus is "not a problem" and called for not escalating the situation.
According to Onishenko, in 1998-1999, about 300 cases of infection were recorded, mainly in Southeast Asia. He recalled that the mortality rate at that time was 70 percent, and noted that in some cases, patients died.
At the same time, he noted that there is still no clear method of effective treatment of the virus, an approved treatment regimen, or fully formed medications. Onishenko stated that medical workers lack comprehensive information on the global spread of the infection, but the situation is under control, monitoring is underway, and there is no room for panic.
