Electric car sales in Europe rose 20% in February

Europe’s new passenger car market showed modest growth in February 2026, with registrations across the EU, EFTA and the United Kingdom rising by 1.4%. Even so, the region’s overall performance for the first two months of the year remained slightly negative, as weak results in January pushed the January-February total down by 1% compared with the same period a year earlier. Electric cars continued to be one of the main growth drivers. In the European Union, registrations of fully electric vehicles jumped by about 20% in February, highlighting steady demand for battery-powered models. The trend suggests that the shift toward electric mobility is still gaining pace, even as the broader market faces mixed conditions.
Germany remained the largest market for new cars in Europe, reinforcing its central role in the region’s automotive industry. At the brand level, Skoda reached second place for the first time, marking a notable change in the competitive landscape. Chinese carmakers also kept expanding their presence, especially in the electric vehicle segment, where they are becoming more visible across European markets.
Among individual models, the Renault Clio held onto first place and became Europe’s best-selling car for the second month in a row in February 2026. Its continued lead underlines the strong demand for compact, affordable models even as the market changes.
