If a baby’s fontanelle closes too early, is it dangerous?

Newborn babies have a soft spot on their heads called the “fontanelle.” This shows that the skull bones are not yet fully fused and is very important for the normal growth of the baby’s brain.

• Genetic factors – in some babies, the fontanelle is naturally smaller.
• Growth speed – if the baby’s bones harden faster, the fontanelle closes earlier.
• Vitamin D deficiency or excess – affects the bone ossification process.
• Changes in intracranial pressure – in rare cases, may require medical supervision.

When to worry?

If the fontanelle is unusually small, closes as early as 3–4 months, or the baby’s head shape appears abnormal — it is necessary to consult a doctor.

In most cases, a small or early-closed fontanelle is a natural process and does not affect the child’s health. The main thing is to have regular pediatric checkups and follow medical advice.
