Yellow crusts on babies’ heads — is it dangerous?

Yellow crusts on babies’ heads — is it dangerous?

Many new parents, seeing yellow or brown hard crusts (scales) on their baby’s scalp, begin to worry. In fact, this condition is most often called “seborrheic dermatitis” in medicine, or popularly “beshik qashqasi, yellow crust”.

Why does it appear?

  • In the first months after birth, hormones passed from the mother to the baby activate the baby’s sebaceous glands.

  • When the sebaceous glands work too actively, an oily layer accumulates on the scalp, and it appears as a yellow crust.

  • This is not a disease, but a natural temporary process.

Is it dangerous?

No. Beshik qashqasi does not cause pain or discomfort for the baby. The main thing is not to scratch or forcibly remove it.

How to care for it?

  • The baby’s scalp can be softened with special baby oil and then gently cleaned with a soft brush.

  • Strong shampoos or medicines should not be used without a doctor’s advice.

  • Most often these crusts disappear on their own within a few months.

Yellow crusts on a baby’s head may seem worrying for parents, but they are a natural process and usually harmless. With proper care, the baby’s scalp will soon become smooth and healthy.
