Uzbekistan delivers more water to Kazakhstan than planned
Since October 2024, Uzbekistan has supplied Kazakhstan with a total of 12.6 billion cubic meters of water. This figure is 1.7 billion cubic meters more than previously planned, and serves to improve water supply for farmers in the southern regions of Kazakhstan.

This was announced by Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, Minister of Water Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, at an international forum in Samarkand. According to him, this volume of water will be used to meet the needs of farmers during the irrigation season.

"The allocation and management of transboundary waters is of great importance in ensuring water security in Central Asia," Nurzhigitov said.

The minister emphasized the need for joint action between countries to combat water scarcity. Earlier, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan reached an agreement on the supply of more than 16 billion cubic meters of water from October 2024 to October 2025.

According to the Ministry of Water Resources of Kazakhstan:

About 1.8 billion cubic meters of water were discharged into the North Aral Sea, which is 120 million cubic meters more than the previous forecast.

490 million cubic meters of water were delivered to Kazakhstan through the Dostyk Interstate Canal.

As is known, the southern regions of Kazakhstan are almost completely dependent on water from Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. In addition, about 60 percent of the water in these regions is spent on agricultural needs.

Experts emphasize that the efficient and equitable distribution of transboundary water resources is one of the decisive factors for regional stability and food security.
