Mobile Photography and Classic Landscape Exhibition to Open at the Tretyakov Gallery

Moscow’s Tretyakov Gallery is preparing to open the large-scale landscape exhibition “Nature Photography” on November 3 this year, combining contemporary mobile photography with a rich historical heritage. Held in the galleries of the building on Krymsky Val, the exhibition will feature around 130 works by more than 30 artists, covering the period from the late 19th century to the present day. Most of them will be shown to the general public for the first time. This was reported by ixbt.com reports .

According to ixbt.com, the exhibition, curated by Nikita Erofeev, will bring together not only works from the gallery’s extensive collection but also photographs by winners of the Huawei XMAGE mobile photography competition. Visitors will be able to view both classic photographs and contemporary images captured with new-generation gadgets. The works will be presented in a dedicated digital section and as a separate offline installation on the second floor.

The Evolution of Photographic Art

The exhibition’s central idea is to reveal photography’s long evolutionary journey, from its early imitation of painting to the development of its own independent and inimitable artistic language. The oldest photographs on display were created by Evgeny Vishnyakov, Nikolay Meshcherin and Igor Grabar, transporting viewers into the atmosphere of a bygone era.

20th-century photography was enriched by distinctive styles and experiments. A special place is given to examples of Nikolay Andreyev’s pictorialism, created using special printing techniques and soft-focus lenses, as well as Aleksandr Rodchenko’s experiments with perspective in constructivism. The exhibition also features Vadim Kovrigin’s architectural photographs of the Moscow region, Anatoly Erin’s Valaam series, Nikolay Kulyabakin’s panoramas, and examples of various performances and land art.

Huawei XMAGE and New Technologies

The exhibition’s technological section clearly demonstrates the capabilities of modern smartphones. In particular, it includes photographs taken with new devices from the Huawei Pura 90s series. According to the available information, the Pura 90s Pro Max model in this lineup is equipped with a 200-megapixel telephoto periscope lens with a large sensor and hardware-level RAW processing during 20x real-time zoom.

The device’s technical capabilities ensure high image quality not only when taking photographs but also when recording video. The smartphone also features a 1/1.28-inch 50-megapixel RYYB sensor, a 40-megapixel ultra-wide-angle module and a 13-megapixel front camera. According to the manufacturer, second-generation XMAGE optics enable 43% more accurate color reproduction and a 34% wider color gamut.

As a reminder, any interested creative can take part in the global competition. Applications for the XMAGE Awards 2026 competition are currently being accepted in Russia and will remain open until August 30 this year. Registration is available through the Community section of the official website, while the date for announcing the winners will be revealed later. Notably, the competition, held since 2017, has received nearly five million entries from more than 170 countries. Since 2024, its exhibitions have been held offline in major cities such as Shanghai, Paris, Dubai and Moscow.
