SpaceX Bought Hundreds of Millions of Dollars’ Worth of Batteries from Tesla

The Elon Musk-led SpaceX significantly increased its purchases this year of Tesla Megapack industrial-scale energy storage systems manufactured by Tesla. According to financial results released on Tuesday, it spent $295 million on these batteries in the second quarter alone, bringing total purchases since the start of the year to $329 million. These major deals clearly show how closely the companies owned by Elon Musk are intertwined. Musk is known to lead both SpaceX and Tesla at the same time and is one of their major shareholders. In addition, his AI startup xAI, which operates in the artificial intelligence sector, previously acquired X, his social media platform, and it became known earlier this year that SpaceX had brought xAI into its corporate structure.

The Role of AI Centers and Batteries

Experts believe these industrial-scale batteries are mainly being installed for use at xAI’s data centers. Even before xAI merged with SpaceX, it had purchased $430 million worth of Tesla Megapack systems for its server centers. By comparison, xAI bought only $34 million worth of similar equipment in the first quarter of this year.

Regulatory filings also reportedly show that, as of December 2025, SpaceX had purchased Tesla Cybertruck electric vehicles worth a total of $131 million at the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. Such large-scale purchases demonstrate the breadth of cooperation between the corporations.

Critical Tasks in Energy Supply

Although xAI primarily uses natural gas to power its data centers, including dozens of turbines located near the Colossus project, large batteries such as the Tesla Megapack remain an important part of the infrastructure. They not only provide backup power that activates within one second but also deliver additional energy when GPUs require peak power.

AI data centers’ electricity needs constantly fluctuate depending on model training and query processing. Such sharp spikes can create additional costs for local utilities or overload on-site generators. Batteries smooth out these fluctuations, helping reduce costs and ensure uninterrupted data center operation.
