Welsh football legend Joey Jones has died at the age of 70
One of the most renowned figures in Welsh football, Joey Jones — who won two European Cups with Liverpool and was known as “Mr. Wrexham” — has died at the age of 70. His death was officially announced by the Football Association of Wales and Wrexham AFC.

According to Wrexham, Jones passed away in the early hours of the morning after a prolonged illness.

“Wrexham AFC are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of club legend Joey Jones,” the club said in a statement.

Brilliant career at Liverpool
In 1975, Joey Jones moved from Wrexham to Liverpool and quickly won the affection of fans. At Liverpool, he won:

2 European Cups (1977, 1978),
1 English league title (1977),
The UEFA Cup and the European Super Cup.

Liverpool also expressed sorrow at his death, stating: “Joey’s dedication and professionalism always made him a fan favorite. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”

Wrexham: A hero at home
Jones began his career at Wrexham and had three separate spells at the club. He served not only as a player but also as a coach, youth team mentor, interim manager, and ambassador.

“He was a true legend on and off the pitch. Always had time for people, genuine and humble. He will be missed by everyone who knew him,” Wrexham said.

The club also announced a statue in his memory will be erected outside the stadium.

Wales national team and other clubs
From 1975 to 1986, Jones made 72 appearances for the Wales national team, playing as a left-back.

During his career, he also played for Chelsea and Huddersfield.
